The PR Update is NOT the End of the World

Everyone relax. Take a deep breath. Now repeat after me. Page Rank is completely worthless. SEO’s and other internet marketing professionals have known this for years. It was the stuff that made Google Great but it was made clear years ago that it has virtually nothing to do with where you rank in the SERPs. Don’t believe me? Do a search for any term and you’ll see sites of all different page ranks listing in the top ten. Notice how they aren’t in descending order ie. all the PR 10 sites are first then followed by the PR 9 and so forth. I’ve got lots of sites in the top ten that have a PR 1 or no PR at all.

So who is fueling this collective freak out in the blogosphere and forums? I’d say it’s the people who were selling links on their high PR sites. You know the type of stuff Matt Cutts warns about but runs rampant any way. So text link sellers will have two options:

  1. Reduce the prices on their newly PR deflated sites since their customer base sees their sites having less value.
  2. Keep prices the same and bitch about the change to every blogger they can find in hopes that Google will budge.

Good luck on number 2 guys.
